Reiki and the Martial Way
Energy Healing is not a huge aspect for training for many martial artist today, however I still felt that it was important to discuss some basics of energy healing in the hopes that others may find it interesting and perhaps find a local Reiki Master in thier area to persue the path futher.
What is Reiki?
What do we use Reiki For?
Webster Definitions Reiki Japanese Rei `universal energy' + Ki `life force' :
a system of hands-on touching based on the belief that such touching by an experienced practitioner produces beneficial effects by strengthening and normalizing certain vital energy fields held to exist within the body
a type of ancient healing involving gentle massage therapy and deep relaxation; also written Reiki, also called Reiki system, Reiki therapy, Usui method, Usui system, Usui;
One of the easiest definitions for Reiki is Reiki is spiritual power. In the physical world Reiki is life痴 energy. Reiki is the source of life. To a Christian it would be the breath of God, a Taoist would refer to it as the great Tao.
Reiki is Ki or Chi as many here know it that is directed by a source that is higher then ourselves. It knows were it is going ad what it is suppose to do when it gets there. As healers we are merely conductions between the source and our patient or client.
How does Reiki Work?
Reiki is healing energy that works through vibrations. When out bodies become weak or sick they become out of balance. What Reiki energy does is helps to restore that balance. This energy works in one of 2 ways. The first it goes to the source of the imbalance or negative part and gently begins to vibrate. Over time this vibration breaks down this negative energy until it simple dissolves and balance is restored. The Second way that Reiki works is it finds the negative source and gently begins to vibrate and instead of dissolving the negative energy changes from its negative to a positive.
Reiki is a great healing art that has been around throughout the ages. Its actual age is truly unknown however we do know for sure that it was rediscovered back in the early 20th century.
Reiki Levels
3 Levels of Reiki
Level 1Reiki Student
Level on in Reiki is the first level for all Reiki Students. In Reiki 1 we receive our first Reiki Attunement and learn the basics of reiki such as history, principles, basic anatomy, and self healing exercises.
Level 2 Reiki Healer
At Reiki 2 we receive our healer attunement. At the second level of Reiki training we learn the 3 primary reiki symbols for healing others. We also learn more hand positions for healing ourselves as well as the hand positions for healing others.
Level 3 Reiki Master
For some reason when you bring up the word Master most people do not understand what you are talking about. A reiki master is not a super human, or on a different spiritual existence then the rest of us. Instead, all a reiki Master is, is a individual who is a experienced healer and is able to attune and teach others reiki. At the Reiki Master level we receive our final Reiki attunement. We also learn a few more advanced Reiki symbols.
In my opinion individual should not train or attune others until they have at least 6 months of Reiki experience. In those 6 months we learn all the we need to know and pick up experience in healing others as well as daily work on strengthening and balancing reiki energy within ourselves. I actually make my students promise not to teach or attune others for at least one year after they receive their final attunement. A couple of people did not like this idea, however they stuck to their promise. A year later when they were preparing to start training and attuning others I met with them and the first thing I heard them both say was how much stronger they feel with Reiki now and how happy they are they decided to wait. I also had some students who broke their words to me and started looking for their own students. After they started their classes they called me ask for a attunement because when they attempted to attune their students it left them feeling weak and disconnected with the universal life source. In Reiki most of the Ki we send out for healing and attuning others is from the universal life source, however we do also use some of our own Reiki in the process, since after all we are part of the universal life source. In the first month of Reiki training my students are strong for healing themselves and others but they are not nearly as strong they will be after a year of treating themselves and others as well as practicing reiki meditations a few days a week.
The beginning of Reiki
Should you choice to study Reiki as a spiritual path, or become a Reiki healer you will learn a great deal about Reiki and the lineage of your Reiki Master but for now I am only going to focus on Dr. Mikao Usui.
Dr. Mikao Usui Born on August 15, 1569 Died on March 9, 1926 When he was young he was taught in the traditions of a Buddhist monk. At Mt. Kurama he studied Kiko the Japanese version of Qi Gong. In Kiko like Qi Gong you learn how to build up Ki or Chi to use for self healing or for healing others. Through this process of laying your hands on another you use your own life force to heal another. Dr. Mikao Usui always wondered if there was a way to heal others with this process without draining the life energy from yourself?
Dr. Mikao Traveled all over Asia and Europe studied and training in Medicine, Psychology, Religion and Spiritual Development. With this training he had a wonderful career in many aspects of Japanese life, until he ran into some bad luck.
In March 1922 Dr. Mikao Usui went to a temple for a spiritual retreat. ON this retreat when deep in meditation he felt the great light and power of Reiki entering through his head and throughout his body. This was the energy he was searching for. The ability to heal others without working up and depleting your own energy.
In April 1922 Dr. Mikao Usui founded the Usui Reiki Healing Society. A school dedicated to training everyone who was interested in learning Reiki and healing others. Dr. Mikao Usui did not want Reiki to be a private, well kept secrete where only a few people would know who to properly perform Reiki healing treatments. He felt that Reiki was a power for everyone and anyone who wanted to learn.
When Reiki was first taught there were 6 levels. The first 4 where known as Shoden or beginning level. The middle state was broken into 2 groups Okuden Zenki or 1st half, and Okuden Kaki 2nd half. The final state was known as Shinpan or Mastery teachings.

- each layer is a different consciousness, and pertains to a specific Chakra
- inner most layer of the aura is connected to the Chakra and so on and so forth
- The average persons aura extends 4-5 feet from the body, when unset or sick the aura can be closer, when excited your aura can extend 20- 30 feet if not more from your body.
Reiki Attunements
As you have learned Reiki is energy from the universal life force that Reiki Healers and Reiki Masters us to heal others of physical, mental or emotional issues. Reiki attunements are what we call it when a Reiki Master passes on this energy to others. An attunement can take as little as 3 minutes to as long as a hour depending on the Reiki Master sending the attunement and the connection the Reiki Master has with the student they are attuning.
Most Reiki Masters offer at least one attunement per level of Reiki. Some Reiki Masters offer up to 4 attunements per level while still a few offer one attunement for the entire process. Normally the last group are the individuals who offer a entire Reiki program over a weekend. There are a also a small group of Reiki Masters that believe anyone can attune themselves with Reiki through simple meditation. You can even go to Youtube.com and attune yourself through a couple of video clips, but I honestly would not try that approach for everyone.
The Cost of Reiki Attunements
This is actually the most tricky part of the Reiki process. There is no set amount for Reiki Masters to charge for Reiki attunements. Some Reiki Masters take advantage of this and use the laws of supply and demand of marketing class to determine what to charge. One can normally find a class that charges $100 to $1,000 per attunement. I understand that a number of Reiki Masters rent space to teach the program so they need to charge enough cash to cover their expenses, however to be honest I believe some Reiki Masters think too much of themselves. According to Reiki History Dr. Usui taught and attuned others for free. Some sources tell us that he taught for free until his final day while others say that Dr. Usui did start healing, teaching and attuning others for free at first but soon learned that if you teach for free people will abuse your kindness.
I do not charge for Reiki attunements and when possible I only charge a small amount of less then $40 per person for the entire program. I charge this amount because the Reiki manuals are rather long and paper, ink and binders can be expensive when you are making 10 or more copies. Any left over cash I have after covering those expenses I will use to pick up bagels, water and tea for my students classes. Yes Tea some Reiki healers/masters do not believe in drinking anything other then water, but honestly tea is quite useful in the healing process. If I can sent the manuals over email as PDF files for my students to print on their own and can teach the program at a persons home I will only take a collection for food and will not actually charge for the program. As it pertains to fees other then cash my students need to promise to give 5-10 minutes per day 4 days a week to Reiki meditation, as well as promise to treat or attune others regardless of ones ability to pay.

Reiki Program
I have been extremely fortunate in my own Reiki Training. I trained under 3 Reiki healers in life and I took one Reiki program offered on the internet the one of my Reiki Masters strongly supported. The advantage of taking the online program was that its manuals were wonderful and as a student of the site I have the right to use the manuals and certifies for my own students. I had a strong Reiki program but this sites program exceeded my program hands down so to benefit my students I signed up for the program.
In real life I prefer to teach the 3 levels of Reiki over a one month time period when possible. I give each student the manual at least one week in advance so the students have the time to read over it a few times before we meet. I cover one level per week with one class for that week. I use the final week to make sure the Reiki Masters are capable Reiki Masters. In each class I cover the material that should be read, offer individual attunements as well as group attunements. Each student is also given time to practice reiki treatments on themselves and the other students. Classes end with group Reiki meditations to strengthen themselves as well as the group as a while.
Unlike other Reiki Masters I also encourage my students to drink Green Tea with Mint as well as water during the classes. Some Reiki Masters tell their students not to drink caffeine before attunements, but I also use the tea for attunement process. To be honest I also think Green Tea with Mint is actually a lot better testing then water is and well in most Asian countries Tea is extremely popular and rumor was that Dr. Choi drank Tea as part of his 21 days of fasting before he was attuned with Reiki.
I have done a couple of Reiki Classes as distance programs for self learning but I prefer not to do this when possible. Reiki can be done over both distance and time but I personally believe attunements in person are stronger then attunements done over distance. To make up for the lack of contact I also self attunement meditation and “rituals” for my students to do. As I said Reiki can be done over any distance but for me having that connection with ones student is important and that attunement is much easier in real life then it is over the internet. (This may sound odd because I have had great success with a online program that I have taken but I also know a number of other people who tried other online training programs and attunements who were not as lucky as I was. As always all Reiki Masters have their own likes and dislikes and no Reiki Master has it correct.
Reiki Self Treatment
A reiki treatment is what Reiki Healers and Reiki Masters use to make sure everything is functioning as it should be and that Ki is circulating through your body properly. Normally this is done at least once per day when the healer wakes up, however it can be done as often as you would like, or whenever you wish. I normally only sleep 4 hours a day so I use Reiki treatments to energize my body a couple times a day, however it can also be used for relaxation or simple to help you regain focus when things are spinning out of control.
The Self Treatment includes 18 hand positions that start at your eyes and ends up at your feet. Some Reiki Healers believe you should be spending no less then 3 minutes on each area, however not many of us have a hour a day that we can dedicate to Reiki treatments. I personally hold each position for 30 seconds or so which takes at least 10 minutes to perhaps up to 15 minutes depending if I linger in a specific spot or two. When doing self treatments you can either touch the positions or if you prefer you can leave your hands 2-3 inches in the air. As a Reiki Healer of others I actually leave my hands away from my body since I do not touch my clients when I can avoid this. With Reiki there are some things that you need to know, however as it pertains to practice the choice is up to you, as it pertains to self practice this really is not a issue, however once you start treating others you need to be mindful of your clients and making sure you keep them as comfortable as possible. For example as you will learn when you train in reiki there are many reiki healers who complete reiki treatments on nude clients after anointing their bodies with oil, personally I am not comfortable with this on any level and I will go out on a limb and say my wife is even less comfortable with this concept. If you and your clients are fine with nudity and so forth that then is wonderful, however if this is not the case it is certainly better for your clients to stay dressed and for you too keep your hand 2-3 inches a way from their body but make sure that they understand that contact does happen from time to time as judging distance is not always perfect.
Treating Yourself
If you have meditative music or scented candles it would be good to light them a few minute before him while you focus on feeling the energy around you and prepare for the treatment process. To get yourself ready it is good to use a mantra, or repeat the 5 principles of reiki 3 times before you began.
Position 1 Place hands over your eyes
Stress, eye issues, head colds, sinuses, asthma
Position 2 place hands on head with tips of fingers making a point just above your head.
Migraine, headaches, emotional issues
Position 3 Place your hands on the side of your head with your index fingers touching your temples
Balance, hearing, ear issues, colds/flu, balance left and right side of the brain
Position 4 Place your hands on the back of your head covering your occipital lobe
Stress, depression, eye issues, shock and depression
Position 5 Place your hands over your neck
Aches and pains, stress, tight muscles
Position 6 Place your hands over your throat covering your throat chakra, fingers going towards the back of your neck
Self expression, communication, breathing issues, bronitis, cold/flu, anger
Position 7 Left hand covering your heart, right hand going up sternum, making a T with your hands
Heart, lungs, emotional issues, stress
Position 8-11
8 hands just above pectorial muscles
9. Hands in a V postion with finger tips meeting at belly button, or lower dantain
10. Hands at hip level with fingers pointing in
11. Hands just below hips with fingers point at a right angle, making a triangle pointing toward bottom chakra
8-11 hand positions deal with organ issues, stress, fight or flight, anger, emotions, infection
Positions 12 and 13 place hands over knees, place hand behind your knees
Leg problems or leg muscle pain
Positions 14 - 17
14 Place hands on shoulders
15 Place hands just above hips
16 Place hands just below hips
17 Place hands over tail bone area
All major organs, glands, fight infection, spinal issues. The same as the front side of body with the exception of also covering back issues.
Position 18 Sit in lotus position with feet touching and place hands over top of foot “kicking surface for high round house kicks”
Your entire body as well as your connection to the world around you.
If you have a google home page there is a app for a reiki body scan that you may find useful, or I am quite sure you can find directions, pictures, and perhaps video clips of self treatment on you tube. I will try posting pictures and perhaps a video here at my website but that will need to wait for a bit.
I personally would say to do a reiki treatment when you wake up, before class and before you sleep at night. This is a wonderful way to replenish your body with energy and to let energy flow to different areas for healing process, I am sure by now you most likely noticed that many of these hand positions are things you have done when in pain, in many ways reiki treatments are instinctive and again something that most people know bits and pieces of without even knowing it.
Doing a Reiki Treatment is also something that I have done before promotional testing and when I do it I seem to have better promotional tests. I have done speed treatments right before testing holding my hands at each position for 10 seconds per area and focused on strengthening the areas before my Danbo test and honestly that was the best test I have ever had.
Final Note on the Hand Positions
The process listed in a entire body scan where you go from one position to the next in a flowing way, however you can also use each position on its own if you are experiencing specific issues. For example if you are dealing with a migraine then just focus on one or more of the positions that help heal migraines and do not worry about the other positions
